Which One is Best? Website Builder Software – What is It
Which One is Best? Last updated on January 6, 2015 By Internet Business Services and Solutions in Business Tips | Comments 40 When it comes to building websites, understanding what is a good website builder software or platform and how to pick one for you will help you move forward in creating your own website. Here’s Wikipedia’s definition : Website builders are tools that allow the construction of websites without manual code editing. There is a lot of website builder software in the market nowadays to help you create your own website, even if you don’t have any technical knowledge. For sure, if you have a bit of coding knowledge, you can take your website design and functionality a lot further – but this is not an absolute necessity when it comes to building websites. It’s not that long ago that if you wanted to create a website, you will either have to go through a painful process to learn how to code, or you have to spend thousands of dollars to hire someone to code one up for you. Not any more. Website builder software such as Squarespace ,  Wix , Weebly , or Jimdo are built to make website building possible for any one, from kids to grandparents.  Specifically, Wix, Weebly and Jimdo have free plans available for you, while Squarespace has a free trial program. WYSIWYG Website Builders / Creators To make website building possible for all levels and ages, the website builders we mentioned above created what the industry calls “ WYSIWYG ” What You See Is What You Get builders. Basically, you get to drag and drop content directly on to a blank canvas for you to build a website. No longer must you code in any content such as paragraphs, pictures, slideshows, dividers, and so on and so forth. WYSIWYG website creators give you the tools so you just have to drag a picture for example from their tool bar directly into the website content area to start constructing your site. You can add pages, subpages, blog posts, pretty much most of the critical components of a website are within your reach. Weebly Website Builder Once you have populated your website with content , you just have to save your additions and publish your site. What you see on your screen when you are editing, will show up exactly the same way when you publish your website that’s why they call it What You See Is What You Get! This makes website creation very simple, straight forward and powerful. Almost anyone can drag content, upload pictures or text, and publish without having to write one line of code. See our Comparison Chart for Website Builder Software Making Your Website Look Good One other benefit of using website builder platform is that they give you a selection of templates or themes. These are basically “clothes” to give your website more style and personality. You can pick from a broad selection of themes to make your website more professional and pretty. Themes from Squarespace Website builders are continually adding more themes to their selection to attract users to pick their builder to create websites. This is a really important consideration for you as most website builders have similar tools for you to use, but what can really set your website apart from others is how your website looks. In our view, Squarespace and Wix provide you with the best looking themes amongst most WYSIWYG website builders. See our discussion on Squarespace templates here See our discussion on Wix templates here Pick from a collection of free beautiful
professional templates Even though Weebly currently falls behind Squarespace and Wix in terms of theme designs, there are independent themes creators in the market that produces premium themes that you can purchase and upload into Weebly. DivTag Templates is one of these premium theme creators and they have a broad range of modern, updated templates to combine with Weebly’s drag and drop web builder Disclosure: We operate DivTag Templates . Which Website Builder Software is Best for You? There really isn’t a “best” website builder software or website builder platform as each has their own pros and cons. Some are more design oriented and can help you build a more attractive website, some are easier to use, some have better e commerce tools, and some come with 24/7 support. What is more important is that you find one that fits your unique needs. Here is a summary of our thoughts and recommendations: Best Designs – Squarespace and Wix Easiest to Use – Weebly and Wix Best e Commerce Tools – Squarespace and Weebly 24/7 Support – Squarespace Also see our detailed breakdown of Pros and Cons here See our High Level Comparison Chart between Website Builders here What’s Bad About WYSIWYG Website Builder Software? WYSIWYG website builders are often criticized as the “ poor man’s ” way of building websites. It’s not as sophisticated or flexible as other more powerful website creators such as WordPress . However, the traditional or more “advanced” way of building websites can really hinder most non technical people from creating their own websites. So from our view, drag and drop website builders definitely breakdown this invisible barrier and opening up the possibility of publishing websites to pretty much every single person. This is not to say that there are no drawbacks when it comes to using WYSIWYG builders. Some of the more popular points against using drag and drop builders include: Customization Limitations – since these website builders are “closed source” software, they only allow you to customize your website to a certain extent, but a lot less flexible than other more advanced website builders. Shared Hosting – as your website will be hosted on these website builders’ servers, you don’t have full control over your own content, and if you violate the website builders’ terms
conditions, they can terminate your account. This is extremely rare, and you really have to be doing something really bad for this to happen. No Backup – most of the builders except for Weebly do not allow you to fully backup your websites. So if you want to take your entire website elsewhere, this is going to be a challenge. Slower Loading Speed – as your website will be hosted on shared hosting, you will be sharing servers and bandwidth with other websites. This will result in slower website loading speed, especially if you have very large image files on your website. So there are definitely trade offs if you choose to use a WYSIWYG website builder. Benefits: The benefits include you not having to know any code to be able to publish a website nor hire developers , the ease of use dragging and dropping content , and customer support from the builders. Drawbacks: These benefits are offset with less flexibility, slower loading speed, and you won’t have full control of where your website is hosted. In our view, these trade offs are definitely worth it if you want to publish a website and don’t have the skills or financial resources to hire someone to build one for you. Conclusion – Website Builder Software Using a drag and drop WYSIWYG website builder to create your website is a quick and effective solution. Instead of investing months to learn codes, you can create a decent website within a day and showcase it to the world. Not everybody has the time or financial resources to create a custom built website or to learn to use to use a more advanced builder such as WordPress or Joomla. If you are building a business related website, and have a smaller budget, using builders such as Wix, Weebly, Squarespace or Jimdo can definitely help you maintain financial discipline, and also allow you to create and update your own website in a very short period of time – no need to call / email your website developer and wait for small updates as you can now make them yourself . Additionally, with the time you save, you can focus on other more important aspects of running your business. The website builders you mentioned are nice. Reply Doug Casner October 4, 2014 at 7:53 PM # I had a website a number of years back that I created using Front Page. I loved Front Page because it allowed me to position things where I wanted, and in the way that I wanted; I wasn’t constricted by the shortcomings of some of the software around then. What I am looking for is software that I can own and possess rivals what Front Page was back then. What would you suggest? Reply Internet Business Services and Solutions October 6, 2014 at 2:30 PM # Hey Doug, I’d suggest signing up for a free account with Wix see our detailed discussion here as Wix is a pure drag and drop website builder in which you can almost place any content pretty much anywhere on your pages. While Squarespace and Weebly are both great website builders, the ability to drag and drop content anywhere on any pages is not as flexible as Wix. – Jeremy Reply Ali July 13, 2014 at 9:14 AM # Hi Jeremy, I have a small problem. I have already gone through WordPress website and purchased a custom domain. The problem I am facing is the development of the blog. I just don’t want blog but also the website. It’s very tough to know the functionality of WordPress integrating the buttons etc . Now I am willing to use that custom domain www.click4gulf.com with weebly. It will be a great help if you guide about taking that domain and using it with weebly. Is it possible? Reply Internet Business Services and Solutions July 13, 2014 at 7:44 PM # Hi Ali, You can certainly use your domain name with Weebly. Just visit their support center here , then there is a “Domain Name” item that you can click on and you will find out how to point your domain name to Weebly. – Jeremy Reply Charly July 1, 2014 at 8:34 PM # Hi! What can i do if i want to implement the “website builder” service in my company as a service to my clients? thnx! charly Reply Internet Business Services and Solutions July 1, 2014 at 10:50 PM # Hi Charly, Weebly has a “Designer” platform that allows you to sell website building services to your clients. So you can brand the Weebly builder platform as your own, so that your clients won’t know that you are using Weebly to power your tools. Just visit Weebly click here and look up their “Designers” option. – Jeremy Reply charly July 2, 2014 at 4:10 PM # Thank you very much! Reply Bob Hamilton May 20, 2014 at 4:19 PM # Hi: I have a website that I built several years ago using Microsoft FrontPage. My hosting service has recently done some upgrading and will no longer allow me to access my site using FrontPage due to security issues with the obsolete software. Will any of these programs allow me to import my existing site and update/republish it without having to re build it from scratch? If not, would you have any suggestions for alternatives? Thanks Bob Reply Internet Business Services and Solutions May 21, 2014 at 1:21 PM # Hi Bob, The only website builder that allow you to import content from other sources is Squarespace but this is restricted to content from Tumblr, Blogger, or if you have an online store from Big Cartel, Etsy or Shopify. Other than that, unfortunately, you will have to rebuild your website from scratch. But these drag and drop builders are designed to make construction of websites easy. The easiest one to use in our view is Weebly . – Jeremy Reply Bob Hamilton May 21, 2014 at 3:04 PM # Hi, Jeremy: Thanks for the response. Having looked a little further into Weebly I don’t think it would fit my needs. I already have a hosting service that is paid up for another year so I wouldn’t be using their service, and based on your response to Brady below it sounds as though I wouldn’t be able to use most of the features. I am looking for a software package I can buy for a one time fee, not a monthly subscription service. Thanks anyway, Bob Reply Brady May 15, 2014 at 3:31 PM # Hello, You state that weebly websites can be backed up but I cant see how to do that anywhere. Do you know how. Reply Internet Business Services and Solutions May 16, 2014 at 12:08 AM # Hey Brady, When you are in Weebly Editor, go to “Settings”, then “Archive / Unpublish”. There you can create an export zip file of your website in which you can import to another host if you want to. But just be aware that you won’t be able to use Weebly’s drag and drop tools to edit your site after you port your website to somewhere outside of Weebly’s platform. To edit your site then, you will need to edit the codes directly. We have more details in our Weebly discussion here under the “Hosting and Export Options” section . – Jeremy Reply Steve April 1, 2014 at 8:30 AM # What are the pros and cons of hosting your own website on your own in house server? Thanks, Steve Reply Jeremy
Connie April 1, 2014 at 6:02 PM # Hey Steve, I think if you have the technical know how and time to manage your own servers, you can tweak and optimize it to work specifically for your website / business. So it can really help you. On the other hand, you have to know what you’re doing or else it can be potentially detrimental to your site if you “break” something along the way. That’s why using professional managed servers either a hosting service such as Bluehost , or hosted services such as Squarespace, Wix, Weebly , etc is in my view, a better alternative as they have dedicated staff to manage, update, and make sure that servers are secured. – Jeremy Reply Johan Breyten March 25, 2014 at 12:57 PM # Thank you Jeremie
Connie, you are helping many people. For us, website building was a big struggle three years ago. There were not many low cost or free building websites at that time. Now there are a number to chose from: Wix, Weebly, Squarespace or Jimdo and we used a few of them. Keep up the good work, Johann
Juliet Reply Shaun Miller March 19, 2014 at 11:02 AM # I agree that coding is difficult and WYSIWYG softwares has drawbacks. I tried to learn WordPress, but found little bit difficult to understand and still trying to learn it. Also made a website with Weebly, it is good. Then bought a website building software with some on page SEO help and creates mobile pages automatically. Can your suggest me any other WYSIWYG software which I can use to build websites for my clients, which has no much limitation as you explained in the post ? Reply Jeremy
Connie March 19, 2014 at 10:20 PM # Hi Shaun, Unfortunately I don’t know of any drag and drop builders that don’t have any of the limitations that I pointed out. The leading builders, such as Squarespace, Weebly, Wix, etc, are always improving their functionality, but I guess it’s very rare to be able to build a website that is custom built where you can customize majority of the website and also upgrade hosting services. – Jeremy Reply Clarissa February 20, 2014 at 2:48 PM # I need help finding a website builder to just create and edit my website. I am have purchased my domain name and am planning on hosting with godaddy.com Reply Jeremy
Connie February 21, 2014 at 11:56 AM # Hi Clarissa, Perhaps start by viewing our website builder comparison chart to get an overview of a number of website builders . From there, once you’ve narrowed down a couple of choices, you can then read our detailed reviews on your choices there are links in the chart . At the end of the day, I’d encourage you to sign up for a free trial or account with your final choices, and invest some time to test them out to see which one of them fits your needs better. Unfortunately there isn’t a “one size fits all” solution unless you pay thousands of dollars to have one custom built for you! , so testing your final website builder choices is a very important process! – Jeremy Reply Dan June 2, 2014 at 10:41 AM # Hope you don’t mind! GoDaddy supports a few site building systems including WordPress, but also offers a site builder. Reply Anna February 18, 2014 at 7:21 AM # Hi Jeremy and Connie, our Company has a website that is built using Umbraco. All computer guys say this is a really great platform however as a user with no code capabilities we find it stiff and limiting. Our developers have set up a few fonts, a few templates but I am missing the variations that WYSIWYG software provide. We are tempeted to scrap our Umbraco site and start. We do not need a complicated website with tons of pages but like lots of Pictures, vivid photos, a few sound files, news feed and so on. The WYSIWYGs that you are discussing above all seem good – my question is: Are there any limitations as fas ar as how the website will look on different computers, mobile devices, Apple etc? We don’t want to create a website that cannot be viewed by certain devices. Any comments on this? Regards, Anna Reply Jeremy
Connie February 18, 2014 at 4:21 PM # Hi Anna, Check out our article on mobile editors for Wix, Weebly, Squarespace and Jimdo here. If you are looking for responsive templates, check out Squarespace. The other 3 website builders have their own mobile editor, but note that their templates are not responsive. – Jeremy Reply Maureen Arnold January 22, 2014 at 1:21 PM # A little while ago, I left you a message asking for help figuring out some basics about website design and hosting. I think I’ve got the answer I was looking for. I contacted TotalChoice Hosting and they do only hosting, no web design help. So, I am going to read your articles about WIX and SquareSpace again and go with one of them to develop and host the website for my new domain name. Sorry to waste your time. I just had to realized that domain registration, website hosting and website development are all 3 totally separate things, even though some companies combine some or all of these services. Thanks again. Maureen Reply Jeremy
Connie January 22, 2014 at 6:48 PM # Hey Maureen, No worries. I just answered your question on the other page. It will hopefully clear up some questions that other readers have as well, so thank you for asking! Yes, those 3 items are separate but you need all 3 to build a website. For both Wix and Squarespace, if you subscribe to their premium plans they give you a free domain name. Then the monthly fee covers the website development / building and hosting services. – Jeremy Reply abbey January 7, 2014 at 6:46 PM # Hi, I have taken a course in dreamweaver and know more than Joe average, but wonder how I could start off with customizing an existing template than later down the road taking it to another level
tweaking it with Dreamweaver. Do any of these companies allow you to do that or are you stuck with their online site templates through their software? Reply Jeremy
Connie January 8, 2014 at 7:32 AM # Hi Abbey, With Weebly and Jimdo, you have full access to the templates’ HTML and CSS codes so you can make modifications as you wish directly within their editor. For Squarespace, you have access to the CSS codes so you can make changes there. So you do get a certain level of flexibility with the website builders I mentioned above, but there are some limitations as to how much you can do as you are playing within their website building platform. – Jeremy Reply Hunter December 3, 2013 at 7:36 PM # Hello, i am looking to start a website and have used wix and wordpress on seperate sites. I want to allow visitors to the site to be able to post a tutorial or something of that nature to my site what would be my best option? i do not want a straight forum look unless i have no choice. Any help would be appreciated and your reviews have already helped me a ton! Reply Jeremy
Connie December 6, 2013 at 1:25 AM # Hi Hunter, It sounds to me that what you need is a customized website interface where people can participate by posting their own content. Unfortunately, none of the website builders that we’ve reviewed on this site has this capability. You may need to hire someone to build a more customized solution for your needs. – Jeremy Reply Steve B November 6, 2013 at 1:29 PM # Great article – question – I have a few domains registered on godaddy just to hold them – can I use one of these builders with godaddy? Also what about web security? I have heard horror stories about websites being infected almost immediately with spam, etc. Thx! Steve Reply Jeremy
Connie November 6, 2013 at 4:48 PM # Hi Steve, Thanks. If you mean if you can link up your domain names with the website builders, then yes, that can be done. Each web builder will have their own specific instructions on how to do this. But the basic idea is to log into your GoDaddy account under Domain Management, then change the DNS domain name server, which is an IP address and point it to the specific website builder that you are using. It’s a relatively quick change once you navigate to the right section in GoDaddy, and linking between the domain name and the website should be established within a few hours up to a day . I think in any web builders you use, the risk of receiving spam comments are pretty much the same. There are tools available with WordPress that can help filter out some spam, but you’ll still receive them. The same goes with the website builders that we review. It’s the same idea as receiving spam email! The email service provider may try to send most of them into the spam / junk inbox, but some of them will inevitably come through. – Jeremy Reply Marjan November 6, 2013 at 7:01 AM # How easy is it to make a weebly site device responsive in a better design than the standard they offer? Reply Jeremy
Connie November 6, 2013 at 9:44 AM # Hi Marjan, Unfortunately Weebly’s mobile optimization settings is not responsive as the templates that they provide are not responsive in nature. What their mobile mobile mode does is to take the content on the webpages, and re arrange squeeze them into a column so it displays better on mobile devices. While this works just fine, it isn’t responsive. If you want to use a website builder with responsive templates, checkout Squarespace our review here . Also see our other article comparing mobile modes for some of the website builders. Hope this helps! – Jeremy Reply Ali Horner October 7, 2013 at 4:41 AM # Hi there, I was just wondering… Weebly uses shared hosting, but if I use weebly through my Bluehost.com account then I have more control. So my question is, how can I set up weebly so that my clients can sign into their websites, as a CMS. Perhaps this is a question to ask blue host? your thoughts and time are appreciated. thank you, Ali Reply Jeremy
Connie October 7, 2013 at 5:12 PM # Hi Ali, Thanks for your comment. Weebly actually has a white label designer platform search “Weebly Designer” on Google , where you can use their CMS as your own, so you can allow your clients to sign into their own website and edit / build their own websites. They will still get the complete Weebly drag and drop experience, except that they won’t know it’s Weebly, as the builder will be branded as yours.
